2011 Regent of the Year
F. Podbielski, MD

Dear ICS Regents and Fellows,

It is my pleasure to announce that Dr. Demetrius Litwin from Worcester, Massachusetts received the 2012 Regent of the Year Award. Dr. Litwin is a General Surgeon practicing at UMass Memorial Medical Center who successfully recruited 10 colleagues into the ICS during the past year.

Remember, recruiting is easy. If you know a colleague that might be interested in joining ICS send an email to Headquarters and provide their name and contact information. Staff will send a letter of invitation noting your sponsorship of that individual.

Membership is the life-blood of the organization and we need every Regent and member of the College to help sustain our noble organization.

Sincerely,

Chand Ramaiah, MD

Dear ICS Regents and All Fellows,

Various levels of the Board of Regents exist to provide every member of the US Section with an opportunity to officially help the organization with its membership activities. Positions include State Regent (a position that also entitles the bearer to a vote in the House of Delegates), Municipal Regent (covering a specific municipality) and Institutional Regent (covering a specific hospital or academic institution). Opportunities for all Regent positions are available at this time. Volunteers are currently being sought to fill vacancies and replace certain existing Regents whose term will expire on December 31, 2011.

If you are currently a Regent and know of an ICS colleague who may wish to become active please forward their name and contact information to Headquarters in Chicago. If you are a Fellow who has an interest in becoming active in the leadership of the Section please contact our Executive Director, Mr. Nick Rebel, by email at nrebel@ficsonline.org or by phone at 800-766-FICS ext. 3127.

Your assistance to develop the membership of our organization is vital to our ongoing success.

Sincerely,

Chand Ramaiah, MD

Dear ICS Regents:

At our recent meeting in Portland, the Board of Regents once again had lively discussions on how to improve our membership situation. If you were unable to attend the meeting, please visit the website and login to Members Only to see the minutes. During the 2 hours that the Board met, as well as during the other meetings held throughout the day, many concepts were proposed to raise the value of ICS membership and ultimately increase membership.

The bottom line from a recruiting perspective is that personal contact works. While we are all very busy, we must find the time to speak with our colleagues and tell them about ICS. The main responsibility of a Regent is member recruitment and this is what has been proven to work. Members recruited by other members are far more likely to remain affiliated with the College for longer periods and this is what we need.

During the meeting last year’s “Drive to 125” project was reviewed.  There was definitely some success and your colleague Francis Podbielski was honored as Regent of the Year. The consensus was that this two year project was worth continuing using this simple concept – if we have approximately 50 Regents and each Regent recruits 2 new members per year, then 125 should be a reasonable goal over a 24 month period. In the period between the 2010 and 2011 annual meetings recruitment by Regents was up over 60% from the previous year, but still well short of our goal of half the “125.”

Participation in the project is also simple – all you need to do is send an email or fax to ICS Headquarters listing the names and contact information for at least 5 colleagues and a special letter of invitation will be sent on your behalf to these individuals. Of course there is a little more involved than that, you must also make the effort to contact these individuals yourself and let them know the invitation is coming and that the College provides valuable resources and opportunities. This combination will yield the results we are seeking with 2 out of 5 being a reasonable goal to achieve.

I encourage each Regent to become more active in their recruitment efforts and strive to be the next Regent of the Year. For your efforts, all recruiters will be listed on the website in the Regents’ Corner and given recognition for their efforts. The top recruiter will also receive the “Regent of the Year” award at the meeting in Atlanta next year. You should feel free to contact Headquarters staff and seek their assistance to make our membership goals a reality.

I am including a newly developed poster that can be hung in a hospital lounge to spread the word about the existence of ICS. Also included are take-away cards that can be attached to the bulletin board with the poster so that your colleagues will be reminded of how to get to the website to apply. Don’t forget – personal contact works and is necessary to let your colleagues know how valuable ICS Fellowship can be.

Good luck and I look forward to hear of the progress we have made to increase our membership.

Sincerely,
