Maxime J-M Coles, MD was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. After attending primary and secondary schools in his native land, he enrolled at the French College in Montreal, Canada affiliated with the University of Caen, France where he received his French and Canadian Baccalaureates (1970). He returned to Haiti and graduated at the State University of Haiti becoming a MD (1970-1976). He also performed a residency in Orthopedic and Traumatology at the State University Hospital of Haiti (1976-1979) as well as a fellowship in hand (1979). He moved to the United States in 1980 and attended general surgery and orthopedic surgery residencies at Howard University Hospital in Washington DC (1980-1987).
He became the Chief of the orthopedic department at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Assistant professor of Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee (1987-1990). In 1990, he moved to Connecticut where he became chief of Orthopedic Traumatology at Bridgeport Yale Health Hospital (1990-2005). In 2005 he was recruited to head the Orthopedic and Trauma department at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center (2005-2010). He is presently an Orthopedist and Traumatologist at Girard Medical Center and specializes in general orthopedics, trauma, sports medicine, hand and pediatric surgery.
Dr. Coles is a fellow of the International College of Surgeons and is currently the Territorial Regent for the North Central Region of the US Section. He has been a Regent since 2000 and has also served as a Vice President. Dr. Coles also holds the position of Chair of the Orthopaedic Specialty Group for ICS. He is also a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery where he holds a certification in Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a senior member of Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) instructor.
Dr. Coles is widely published and is a sought after speaker often invited in foreign countries, for exhibits, conferences, and teaching sessions. He often participates in medical missions to underdeveloped countries. He became a visiting professor in many countries with the International College of Surgeons (ICS), the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad (AMHE), and the American Fracture Association (AFA).
Dr. Coles has three children Gerard-Maxime, Rene-Max, and Carolyn Lara. His hobbies include photography, as well as sports like soccer and basketball. He participated in the 1972 World Pre Olympics at Cali, Columbia (CONCACAF ) and remained the captain of the Haitian National Team of Haiti for years.
He is fluent in French, Spanish, and Creole to accommodate a wide range of patients needs.
Dr. Coles is currently residing in Rural Girard, Kansas and keeps an office is in the Medical Office Building adjacent to Girard Medical Center in Girard at 307 N Hospital Drive, Suite 3, Girard, KS 66743.
