The United States Section Alliance serves a multitude of functions; primarily to support the United States Section through contributions to the Continuing Medical Education program. In addition, it offers social opportunities for the families of our section members at the Annual Meeting and throughout the year. The Alliance has also sought opportunities to increase awareness of the College by offering support to outside organizations that have missions in keeping with those of the International College of Surgeons-US Section. Recently, contributions have been made to the Red Cross for disaster relief; a Medical Student Stipend program was created to give students the opportunity to attend the Section’s Annual Meeting, the Alliance has even hosted an event at a children’s hospital to entertain the patients.
At a recent board meeting, a grant was awarded to support a medical mission to Honduras. This year we once again invite any member of the Alliance who knows of or is part of a group that would like to be considered for a grant, to apply for the 2012 Alliance Stipend.
If you know of a group involved in humanitarian work, medical missions, or even a medical student seeking support for a project, you may apply for this stipend by submitting an application form. Download the complete instructions and application form from the Alliance page of www.ficsonline.org/stipend. All applications must be received by May 1. The Alliance Executive Committee will review applications and vote at its June 2012 meeting in Atlanta.
Please keep in mind; the ideal organization/project should have some connection to medicine, surgery, or humanitarian relief. The maximum amount available for any grant is $1,000.
Finally, the Alliance Board will reserve the right not to make a grant if there are no applications, or if an application fails to meet the guidelines as outlined in the application materials.
