The International College of Surgeons, United States Section and Pfizer
are proud to announce the recipient of the 2012 Humanitarian Service Award
DOMINGO T. ALVEAR, MD, FACS, FICS
Founder, World Surgical Foundation
Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery
Pinnacle Health Hospital, Harrisburg, PA
In 1997; Dr. Domingo T. Alvear, a pediatric surgeon, founded World Surgical Foundation
with a vision to extend the efforts of traditional surgical missions. He and his wife, Dr.
Veneranda B. Alvear, an anesthesiologist, participated in many missions to their native
Philippines. They were fulfilled by their work but knew, too, that the continuing, quality
surgical care abruptly stopped at the mission’s end. Dr. Alvear wanted to help the
local physicians, who eagerly learned from the mission doctors, acquire the medical
equipment and supplies they needed to continue providing good, quality healthcare.
He shared his concerns with other mission minded Central PA healthcare workers, business
people and volunteers, and World Surgical Foundation was born. In keeping
with World Surgical Foundation’s vision, providing medical training and supplying resources
is part of the “extended” mission.
Dr. Alvear receied the Humanitarian Service Award during the Convocation Ceremony on
June 9th at the 2012 Annual Meeting in Atlanta.
Pfizer’s support and participation in the Humanitarian Service Award program is greatly
appreciated. The New Fellows Reception on Saturday evening was sponsored in part by
a generous grant from Pfizer Inc.
