Multiple cash prizes, including a $1,000 Grand Prize for the winning submission.

General Information and Eligibility
The Scholarship and Research Committee of the ICS - US Section invites medical students, residents and fellows in general surgery and all surgical specialties (including anesthesiology, pathology and radiology) to submit original clinical research with pertinent clinical application for this competition. Medical students must have completed at least their first semester.

General Information and Eligibility
To enter, all participants MUST be a Junior fellow of the International College of Surgeons - US Section.

  • If you are not already a Junior Fellow, use this link to apply – there is no application fee to join and there are no membership dues for Junior Fellows.
  • You can submit your Junior Fellow application at the same time that you submit your abstract.
  • Submissions from any surgical specialties (including anesthesiology, pathology and radiology) will be accepted.
  • Your presentation must contain original clinical research with pertinent clinical application for this competition. It cannot have been previously presented at any ICS-US meeting. (you may use this presentation for other organizations or publications.)
  • Only one (1) submission per participant (pick your best)
  • All applicants must present live-in-person in Philadelphia to win a cash prize.
  • All presentations MUST be given by the submitting applicant.
  • The deadline for application submission is November 1, 2023.

Applicant Rules and Submission Guidelines
The submitting authors of the top reviewed abstracts will be required to present their research at our Annual Surgical Update, April 25-27, 2024, at the Wyndham Historic District Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. Winners will be selected based on both abstract content and oral presentation.  Lodging, travel arrangements and any expenses associated with participation are the responsibility of the submitting author. Submissions accepted that qualify for live presentation are expected to register for the meeting. General registration fees are waived for competition participants.

  • Go to the electronic submission form (link located below).
  • Complete all required information including the financial relationship(s) disclosure.
  • Complete your Jr. Fellow Application if you have not already applied.

Judging and Award Distribution
This competition has a 2-part judging process:

Step 1:  The abstract information you submit now will be evaluated and scored by the Scholarship Committee. Make sure your information is accurate and complete.

Step 2: The highest scored submissions will be invited to provide a 15-minute (max) video presentation that will be judged. Both scores will be combined & averaged to identify potential winners of cash prizes.

Step 3: Anyone asked to submit a video presentation MUST also attend the meeting in Philadelphia and present their work in-person. All winners will be announced at the meeting from among the presenters.

  • Submission Deadline (No Extensions): November 1, 2023.
  • Invitation sent to top abstract submissions to submit a video will be sent on or about December 15, 2023.
  • Deadline to submit video presentation for judging: January 15, 2023
