Sharique Nazir, MD, FICS, FACS, FASMBS

Dr. Sharique Nazir is a distinguished board-certified surgeon, known for his expertise in bariatric and robotic surgery. Currently serving as Chief of Bariatric & Robotic Surgery and Assistant Chairman of Surgery at NYC Health and Hospital/Harlem, as well as Assistant Professor at Columbia University/Irwing Medical Center, Dr. Nazir brings a wealth of experience and leadership to this role.

With a career spanning just over a decade, Dr. Nazir has, nonetheless, made significant contributions to the field of surgery, both in clinical practice and academic research. His tenure as Honorary Police Surgeon for the New York Police Department and New York State Troopers reflects his commitment to public service and community health.

Dr. Nazir's dedication to surgical excellence extends beyond the operating room. He joined ICS in 2015 and has held numerous leadership positions within this prestigious organization, including Chair of Trauma, Chair of the Council of Specialty Groups as well as Chair of the Board of Regents for the US Section. In January 2024, Dr. Nazir assumed the position of President-Elect of the International College of Surgeons, US Section, with his role as President beginning on January 1, 2025.

Dr. Sharique Nazir is a distinguished robotic/laparoscopic surgeon based in New York City, acclaimed nationally and internationally for his expertise and leadership in complex hernia repair, weight-loss/bariatric surgery, gallbladder disease, abdominal surgery, and colorectal surgery. His proficiency in employing advanced technologies, such as robotic platforms and minimally invasive techniques, has been pivotal in ensuring safer operations, reduced hospital stays, minimal discomfort, and quicker recoveries, ultimately enhancing patients' quality of life.

Former Attending at NYU Langone Medical Center, Dr. Nazir is a revered Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and society of American Gastroenterologist and Endoscopic surgery and the International College of Surgeons. His academic contributions include positions as Associate Professor of Surgery at St. George’s University School of Medicine; Assistant Professor at New York Medical College School of Medicine and Former Assistant Professor at NYU School of Medicine.

Dr. Nazir was born in India and did his pre-med studies at the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute, Russia. He went on to obtain his medical degree with honors from the Fatima College of Medicine in Manila, Philippines. His comprehensive post-graduate training included a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery/bariatric at NYU Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, along with additional Fellowship training at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte. He was also trained at Lewisham University Medical center, London and Leeds Teaching University Hospital in England. With numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international medical conferences, Dr. Nazir's research and work in the surgical field are well recognized. Among his many accolades, he holds a special connection to the community where he practices, notably exemplified by his honor of throwing the first pitch at Brooklyn Cyclones Stadium in 2015.

Dr. Nazir's commitment extends beyond surgical advancements; he is dedicated to patient education and communication, ensuring that all questions and concerns are thoroughly addressed, thereby embodying the role of both a devoted surgeon and educator.

Throughout his career, Dr. Nazir has been recognized for his outstanding achievements, including being named Regent of the Year by the International College of Surgeons (ICS) in 2017. He is also a sub-editor for the ICS Journal, contributing to the advancement of surgical knowledge and education.

Beyond his clinical and academic pursuits, Dr. Nazir is deeply engaged in professional societies and global health initiatives. He serves as Governor for the World Body of the International College of Surgeons.

Dr. Nazir's commitment to surgical education is evident in his extensive list of publications, abstracts, and poster presentations. He is a sought-after speaker at international conferences and has moderated sessions on various surgical topics.

Fluent in multiple languages, including Russian, Hindi, and Urdu, Dr. Nazir embodies the global perspective essential for leading the International College of Surgeons in addressing the challenges and opportunities facing surgeons worldwide.

As the 2025 President of the International College of Surgeons, US Section, Dr. Sharique Nazir indicates he will continue to champion excellence in surgical practice, education, and innovation, furthering the mission of the organization to advance surgical care and improve patient outcomes on a global scale.
