The Dr. Andre Crotti Lecture

Firearm Injury Prevention: Strategies, Recommendations and Opportunities

Dr. Ronald M. Stewart graduated from medical school and completed his surgical residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Following this he completed a Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. 

He returned to San Antonio in 1993 as the Director of the Trauma Service. Dr. Stewart has served as the Board Chair of the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council for Trauma since 1996. In 1999 he was awarded the Faculty Member of the Year Award from The University Health System. That same year he and the Shattered Dreams development team were awarded the Bronze Quill for writings on the award winning injury prevention program Shattered Dreams/D.E.A.D. (Drinking and Driving End All Dreams). 

In May 2000, Governor George W. Bush appointed Dr. Stewart to the Governor’s Emergency Medical Services and Trauma Advisory Council where he served until 2014. He was the chair of the South Texas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma for six years, and followed for another six years as the ACS COT Region VI Chief (Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas). He currently serves as the Chair of the ACS Committee on Trauma. Dr. Stewart was a founding member and the first Chair of the National Trauma Institute. 

At the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio he is a tenured Professor of Surgery and Anesthesia, and since 2008, he has served as the Chair of the Department of Surgery, holding the Dr. Witten B. Russ Chair in Surgery. Dr. Stewart has received numerous awards for teaching and service. A partial listing of these includes the Presidential Award for Clinical Excellence (2004), the Distinguished Alumnus of the UTHSCSA School of Medicine (2005) and the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award (2007). 

In 2013 he was the recipient of the National Safety Council Surgeons Award for Service to Safety and the American College of Surgeon's Arthur Ellenberger Award for Excellence in State Advocacy. 

He is a member of the American Surgical Association, the Southern Surgical Association, the Western Surgical Association, Immediate Past President of the Southwestern Surgical Congress and the Secretary of the Texas Surgical Society.

How Good Physicians Find Themselves in Bad Situations

Ryan Bayley, MD, Associate Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Surgery, Duke University; Emergency Physician, Wake Emergency Physicians (WEPPA); EMS Medical Director Granville County


Dr. Ryan Bayley is an executive coach and physician advocate who has worked with thousands of clinicians to optimize their careers and happiness. To that end, he is the founder of Bayley Coaching Solutions, a physician-focused executive coaching and consulting firm. His group works with multiple states’ medical boards and physician health programs, as well as individual healthcare organizations. In addition to his coaching and consulting work, he is a nationally recognized speaker and author - having most recently published Physician Non-Grata: A survival guide for physicians accused of poor communication, boundary issues, and disruptive behavior.

Dr. Bayley began his career as an emergency physician, which he still practices while serving as an emergency medical services director for 911 systems. He also currently holds an associate adjunct position at Duke University Medical Center, where he leads courses on physician well-being and career design. He completed his residency at Columbia and Cornell Universities (New York-Presbyterian) and his fellowship with the Fire Department of New York. He attended Vanderbilt for medical school and completed his undergraduate at Harvard.

Special Luncheon Lecture

Entrustable Professional Activities in General Surgery Residency

Daniel Dent, MDChair, Department of Medical Education; Professor and Vice Chair for Education, Department of Surgery;  University of Texas Health, San Antonio Long School of Medicine

 

Dr. Daniel L. Dent is the Residency Program Director and a Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Emergency Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Dent’s clinical practice is in Trauma, Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery. He is a native of Orlando, Florida who completed a bachelor's degree in Psychology at Duke University. Dr. Dent obtained his medical degree from the University of South Florida. As a student, he worked summers and holidays for the Walt Disney Company for 11 years. He subsequently completed his residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis; his residency included an additional year of research in Trauma and Nutrition Support.

Dr. Dent has published more than 70 scientific articles. His clinical and translational research focus is in autotransfusion, where he has mentored medical students as they coordinated a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, researchers, and hematologists to investigate and better define the makeup of hemothorax and its suitability for autotransfusion. He also leads a research team in surgical education that has investigated patient acceptance of surgical residents in their care, factors affecting boards pass rates, and the fate of preliminary surgical residents among other topics. 

Dr. Dent is a Councilor of the American Board of Surgery where he serves as the Chair of the Certifying Examination Committee. He is the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) representative to the Organization of Program Director Associations and a Past President of the APDS.
