A Message from the President

Dear Colleagues,

It is my genuine pleasure to invite you to attend the 84th Annual Surgical Update of the International College of Surgeons-United States Section (ICS-US), which will be held from May 4-6, 2023 at the Hilton Palacio Del Rio in San Antonio, Texas. I truly hope you can join us for our 2023 US Section annual meeting, registration is now open.

I also extend a cordial welcome to the members of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons who will be joining us for their 46th Annual Scientific Meeting. Having worked closely with several ICSUS leaders who are also members of the Academy, I can attest to the important contributions this group has made to the overall success of our past gatherings. The collaboration between our groups has allowed both organizations to realize their respective goals.

Click on the link below to review the preliminary Scientific Program. We will begin our educational activity on Thursday afternoon, May 4th, with a session on Global Surgery that will also feature several special presentations by ICS Fellows as well as invited guests. Additional special lectures as well as specialty sessions will be included during our three-day educational activity to provide ample AMA Category 1 CME credit.

Home to the Long School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center; San Antonio will also provide a number of faculty members from this prestigious institution. Included will be trauma surgeon, Dr. Ronald M. Stewart, MD who currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. Dr. Stewart is the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Andre Crotti Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession of Surgery. His presentation topic, Firearm Injury Prevention: Strategies, Recommendations and Opportunities, will surely stimulate some thoughtful discussion. Participants can apply credit for this session towards their "ethics" CME requirements.

San Antonio is an historic city that will provide an abundance of social opportunities to all who attend our conference. To allow participants with ample time to enjoy San Antonio, we are not scheduling any group activities on Friday evening.

Our meeting venue is conveniently located on the San Antonio River Walk with many restaurants and attractions only a short distance away. More information will be posted on FICS Online as we approach the meeting date, but if you don’t want to wait, visit the San Antonio Visitors Bureau at https://www.visitsanantonio.com/. More information about San Antonio is available at the bottom of this page.

Please REGISTER today and watch your inbox for updates. For this year’s meeting we are once again limiting the amount of printed materials being produced and instead will distribute most of our meeting information digitally. We will be sending e-mail messages with meeting related links included as new information becomes available. Be sure to watch your email for information about meeting registration, hotel reservations and the scientific program.

Whether you know about San Antonio and have visited before or if you have never had a chance to visit, this is a perfect opportunity to discover everything there is to do in this popular destination. An abundance of activities, fine dining, entertainment as well as top notch education will all be part of the ICSUS 84th Annual Surgical Update in San Antonio this May.

I hope you will join me and celebrate Cinco de Mayo in a part of the country that knows how to do it the right way!
